The relatively small town of Magaliesburg lies at the foot of Africa’s oldest mountain - the Magaliesberg Range. The area offers something for everyone, whether you are on a fossil trail, in search of the perfect crystal, or just looking for pure fun and adventure, its all there for the asking. There are a variety of Magaliesburg tours from Johannesburg.

The town itself has a Crocodile Ramble, set up by artists who have chosen this breathtaking part of the world to settle in and do their work, and you can amble along, all the way up to the Hartebeespoortdam, finding pottery, sculptures, and paintings done by these gifted people.

There are also plenty of restaurants and pubs to choose from, as well as a fascinating shop filled with fossils and crystals. The four star Wellness Centre, apart from the relaxing temptation of a massage or hot stone therapy, also offers conferences/ wedding facilities.

There are other places to stay, which also offer conference/wedding facilities, or self-catering cottages, as well as farm stays where quad biking is a must! There are paint ball games, quad bike riding, horse back riding, clay pigeon shooting, mountain walks, game walks, mountain biking - or why not just laze around a swimming pool or lapa, enjoying the day.

The Elephant Sanctuary nestled at the foot of the Magaliesberg offer elephant back safaris, where leopard, porcupine, caracal, impala, and a host of other small mammals can be spotted from the backs of these magnificent mammals. There are also up to 350 bird species in the area. The De Wildt Cheetah Research Centre offers you the opportunity to learn more about the endangered species that they are trying to save, like the rare Egyptian Vulture, wild dog, the brown hyena, and other endangered animals - well worth a visit.

Be blown away as you discover the wonderful world around the Magaliesburg town, which is not far from the Cradle of Humankind - the oldest and most perfect human skull was found in this area. A 2.2 billion year old cave in the nearby Rhino and Lion Park, with an awe-inspiring underground lake, is definitely worth a visit.

 For the more adventurous types, the quad bikes and 4 x4 trails are also offered as overnight trails - rough it up and sleep in designated pit stops, perfect family or business fun - trails range from easy to “caution”!  Abseiling down the mountain face or into a cave is easily arranged, with a professional guide, lunch, and all equipment provided. Another way to enjoy the mountain, apart from mountain climbing, which is also a possibility, is “kloofing”.

Kloofing is a combination of abseiling, jumping, swimming, wading and sliding, stopping for a well-deserved lunch break at the top of the mountain, where panoramic views of the Hartebeespoort Valley can be enjoyed, before the descent when the sliding, abseiling, wading begins- a full day tour, all equipment, guide, and lunch provided-all you need to do is to bring your reasonably fit self along to enjoy!

Hot air ballooning in the crisp quiet early morning is perfect over these stunning mountain tops-taking approximately 1 ½ hours, a deluxe champagne breakfast after your flight is included, and so is the sense of peace and tranquility!

Canopy Tours, high above the treetops, looking down at the bountiful fauna and flora, is another way to enjoy the beautiful scenery- suspended by very secure ropes, you slide or glide from platform to platform, taking about 2.5 hours, with professional guides assisting all the way. A little bit more speed needed? Try your hand at mountain biking, or hang-gliding- (hang gliding can also be done at the nearby Hartebeespoortdam) or for an even faster wow factor, why not fly over the Magaliesberg mountains in a Thunderbird aeroplane?
